Breast Cancer Awareness Month and The Power of One

Last year I had my first mammogram.  Ouch. Not fun. I was sore for three full days afterwards.

I'm absolutely certain that a man invented that horrible contraption that is made to unnaturally squeeze one of my sensitive female parts into something that resembles a pancake.

Fast forward to this year.  Not quite so bad.  As recommended I steered clear of caffeine and took a couple of ibuprofen before the exam but I still very much dislike that man.  My yearly mammogram is one of my yearly birthday presents to myself in order to stay healthy and be here for my family for many, many years to come.

Even though I conduct monthly self-breast exams (so I'm fairly certain I'd notice if there was a change or lump in my breasts) I still get very nervous waiting for the results.  The wait for those results seems like an eternity.  Luckily both of my mammograms have been clear.  Nothing to worry about. I can only imagine what it feels like to get those unnexpected, unwanted, life-changing results that inform you that you have cancer.

I know a couple of people that have fought, and won the battle against breast cancer.  Two very courageous women who don't even know that they were inspiring me as I watched them from a distance fight and conquer it.  Their grace and strength was an amazing thing to witness.

Why am I telling you this?  Because October is breast cancer awareness month and I want to do my part to help.

Now through the end of October, 2012, the makers of Freschetta® pizza are helping to promote breast cancer awareness through their new The Strength of 1™ campaign, which includes sponsoring Bright Pink, the only national non-profit organization focusing on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women, while providing support to high-risk individuals. The mission of this The Strength of 1™ initiative is to inspire everyone to realize they can make a difference in some way in the fight against breast cancer.

Get involved.  Chances are you know someone that in some way has been touched by breast cancer.  Here are some ways you can:
