Annual Family Fun at Kennywood

We have an annual Summer tradition.  Every year we take a family trip to Kennywood Park.  We've been making the trip every year for the last thirteen years.  It started a couple of days after I met my husband and has continued every year since.

It seems the family dynamics of who comes with us differs every year.  This year My eldest son rode with us.  My oldest daughter joined us later in the day.  My middle daughter was ill and my step-daughter wasn't able to get the day off.  So just five of us headed out early to make a day of it.

Kennywood park has been around for many, many years.  It's 110 years old,  It has a great blend of old favorites and new thrills.  They are continually adding new rides while retaining some of the older favorites that we love to ride year after year.

My sons were off to ride the Jack Rabbit, an old wooden roller coaster, even before we had parked ourselves in a picnic pavillion.  We always pack the ice chest full of drinks and healthy snacks for pit stops throughout the day.  John and Christopher hit the Aero 360 while me and Caitlyn hit Kiddieland for a while.

Of course I, the adrenaline junkie wanted to ride Kennywood's newest thrill ride the Black Widow.  Christopher joined me.  What a rush.  This gigantic pendulum twists in a circle as it swings back and forth up into the sky.  That was the highlight for me.  Joshua rode the Sky Rocket for the first time - a roller coaster that goes upside down.  That was a big first for him.

We broke up into groups throughout the day so everyone got to ride what they wanted to.  Caitlyn and I rode the Kangaroo, Paratrooper and Pirate Ship while the boys rode the Steel Phantom and Raging Rapids.  We met up to ride the carousel and Garfield's Nightmare together then to get some of our favorite fare - Chicken Tenders and Potato Patch fries.  Then it was back to as many rides as we could squeeze in before the sun set.

It was a hot day but the lines were not long and we were able to ride everything we wanted to before dark which was great because Joshua and Caitlyn were exhausted by the end of the day.  One last stop at the candy shop so everyone could get a treat and our day was over.  Another trip to was Kennywood complete...that is until next year.  See you in 2013 Kenny!
